Water is not endless. Clean water is a dwindling natural resource and water resources are unevenly distributed. Finnish person uses an average of 155 liters of water a day, when a global average is 22 liters/person. Drinkable water is also consumed for many things other than drinking or cooking, such as doing dishes, laundry or taking a shower.
Energy saving can directly reflect in housing costs. In addition to money, the pursuit of energy efficiency saves the environment as well as improves indoor air conditions and living comfort. Energy and water costs are typically 30-40% of a housing company’s maintenance costs. Your own consumption habits also have an effect: the effect of residents’ consumption habits on the housing company’s consumption level is +/- 5%.
POAS reduces water consumption by various means, such as installing water saving components in the water fixtures of our apartments. Current standard showers’ water flows with the speed of 12 liters/minute, but older models or large rain showers can flow even 20 liters in a minute. Shortening your showering time by few minutes can save tens of liters of water per day.
Tenants can get a shower coach from POAS office to measure time spent in the shower. Shower coach is a hourglass that you can attach on the wall of your shower. Sand flows for 4 minutes.

Report leaking water fixtures
Leaking water fixtures, such as toilet seat, water taps or pipes, increase water consumption in your building. Sometimes a leak can be almost unnoticeable and therefore incur significant costs before the issue is located and repaired. So that increased water bill would not increase your rent, we are kindly asking you to locate the leaking water fixtures.
How to locate leaks
- Observe the toilet seat: do you notice purling sound or water surface ripples? These can be signs of leaking fixture.
- You can also conduct a test with toilet paper. Place a piece of toilet paper inside the toilet seat on the back wall, or under a water tap in a dry sink. If the piece of paper gets unmistakably wet, the water fixture is leaking.
- Report leaks to POAS by filling out a Notice of defects
Thank you for helping us to reduce water consumption and take care of the environment.

Installation of plastic recycling bins is finished and all of our housing complexes have plastic collection bins. The collections bins as well as signboards were updated with plastic recycling instructions. Please pay attention to these new waste collection arrangements when you take your waste to waste collection points!

There are these kind of signboards in waste collection points.
What belongs / does not belong to plastic waste?
All following empty, clean and dry plastic household packaging can be thrown into the plastic waste collection bins:
- Plastic food packaging such as yoghurt pots, butter tubs and packaging for colt cuts, cheese and ready meal (photo)
- Detergent, shampoo and soap packaging
- Plastic bottles, cans and jars (preferably flattened)
- Plastic carrier bags, bags and wrappings

DO NOT put these into plastic waste:
- Dirty plastic packaging and mixed waste
- Packages that contain remains of hazardous waste (such as different chemicals)
- PVC packaging (marked as “03”)
- Other plastic products (such as toys, buckets, dishes) or plastic packaging waste from companies
Please note that the recycled plastic waste should be clean and dry. Rinse or wipe the packages before throwing them into the collection bin. If you need to use hot water or washing liquid to clean the packages, might be better for the environment to just throw those into the mixed waste.
More information and recycling instructions can be found from here.
You can now apply for our new apartments that will be completed in Fall 2020! The application process is same than applying any other POAS apartments – by filling out the application form on our website.
Vaahterakuja 3A in Peltolammi area is the first student housing project in Finland that has received so-called green loan financing from the municipal financing, directed at financing green investments. Due to the financing, selected applicants must fill POAS’s tenant criteria as mainly students are accepted.
Green loan financing is an indication of the investment in environmental well-being of the building design, technical solutions and construction.

From the start, this eight-storey 56-apartment building has been designed to be modern and, above all, ecological. For the first time in POAS’s history, this building will have a geothermal heating. Its construction costs are slightly higher than in district heating, but careful calculations show that the system will pay off in less than 10 years. The building will have underfloor heating, which ensures a comfortable and even distribution of heat to the room and there are no radiators in way of interior design. In general, all choices and technical solutions have been advanced with energy efficiency first in mind.
See 3D-visualisation models from studio apartment and a 2-room apartment!
Despite all the great environmental technology, people are in the center of the design. Building has seven floors, and the eighth floor will be a rooftop club room with stunning views and a rooftop terrace. The first floor, in turn, has a soundproofed music room where you can play, sing and rap in peace. Who knows if the room turns into a small studio…

New apartments in Ristinarkku
Ristinarkuntie construction project will also be completed in Fall 2020. Three blocks of flats are currently under construction at Ristinarkuntie 18, and the apartments are ready to move in in September. There is a grocery store in the next building and nearest restaurants are located on the other side of the road.

There will be a total of 143 flats in these buildings. Apartment sizes vary from 25 to 63 square meters.

Ristinarkuntie 18 housing complex will have very comfortable common areas. Buildings have common saunas, and one of the buildings is completed with club rooms for tenants. A separate cozy waiting area is built alongside the laundry, where you can spend time with other laundry users.

Further, the tenants will have access to a well-equipped gym and two charging points for electric cars.
Poastinen is our customer magazine which have been published twice a year since 2016. Due to Ecocompass environmental certificate, we aim to decrease the amount of paper information and move our services to digital platforms. Therefore we’ll publish a new, electronic Poastinen newsletter, which is delivered four times a year. More frequent publication cycle also allows us to utilize Poastinen for informing tenants about current topics.
All contents of electronic newsletter is provided both in Finnish and English. It will be sent via email through our tenant portal, so our tenants are able to read the previous newsletters afterwards by logging into tenant portal. In addition, we want to keep a piece of old traditions and publish one paper magazine too. Annual paper publication will be delivered to tenants’ homes during summertime.
Poastinen, both paper and electronic form, are available for reading also in our office and in the Poastinen publication section of our website.
